Three words to describe Ignite Chester on Friday night; crazy, captivating and challenging! We hit off the night with a truly disgusting game where one member from each team had to drink a full can of coke through a friend's dirty sock!! Gravity, our unbeaten winners once again won the game!
After having a time of worship led by the awesome band, Zoe Abernethy from Youth for Christ was up on the stage to preach on leadership, with her preach entitled ‘So you think you can lead?’. I think that most of us believe that leadership is something that comes to people naturally, that leaders are ‘born’ but Zoe brought to light that anybody can be a leader, and that we all have the potential to become one, as leaders are simply people who are purely themselves in who God has made them to be and people that inspire others to do the same too.
In Exodus 4:10 we read of Moses who himself was insecure and felt unqualified to be a leader, but God chose him because he had a willing heart and he trusted in God. Like Moses we too can feel unqualified, insecure and unable to be a leader, when really if we just trust in God and have our heart in the right place then we can have a big influence on people! It is all about God’s ability to something amazing and not our own.
It is easy to assume a leader has to be a certain personality type, but great leaders have different personality types and different purposes. They know their purpose, they are set apart and unafraid to go first when they know they are acting to fulfil their purpose. To know our purpose, Zoe revealed all it takes is having simple conversations with God, getting to know him, as he is the one that has given us our identity and purpose!
Something I’m sure we all struggle with is comparison, like Zoe said she has, but to be a great leader we shouldn’t compare ourselves to others, because we all have different God given purposes, and we wouldn’t be fulfilled if we were to live according to someone else’s purpose too! Great leaders don’t look towards people to be guided towards fulfilling their purpose, but they look towards Jesus.
Another quality of a great leader is taking risks. Yes this will require you to be uncomfortable, but if you don’t take risks, then you won’t see change. It’s not easy, but we were reminded on Friday that you don’t have to do it alone, because to do difficult things in life, we need each other. Jesus asked us to take risks, he called out Peter to walk on water in Matthew 14:29, and Peter, by taking that risk, took steps closer to Jesus. So, the bigger those risks are, the closer we will become to Jesus, and the more like him we will become, making us the best leaders.
As a lasting thought, Zoe reminded us that the same God that lives within us, lives within great leaders. We’ve been created out of dust for greatness on this earth as leaders, we just have to choose to be a great one.
We can’t wait to see you all for another great night at the next ignite on July 14th, it’s going to be awesome!
