The night kicked off with a great time of worship, Jonah led us in some ‘dance moves’ and the lyrics of ‘King of my heart’ reminding us that in God we have a loving father who is “never gonna let us down”
Luke got up and told us about ‘The weekend’ in July which sounds like a great opportunity to bless and love the city of Chester. He also said some random stuff about praying on the toilet but we won’t go into details…
Five Minutes of Fire
Five Minutes of Fire gives a teenager who comes along to Ignite the chance to share testimony of God’s work in their life and we are always amazing by the powerful insights that are shared, this month was no different- another wow and a real highlight of the night! The theme for April was ‘God’s Plan’ and Valentina talked us through God’s plan for his people, how sin ruined the plan but how Jesus restored it. She also wisely reminded us that God sometimes reveals his plans for us in stages, using her own experiences of God speaking to her and loads of great scripture to back it up.
This month’s guest speaker was Jay Lusted, an absolute legend from Festival Church. Jay started his talk in Genesis at the start of the bible, explaining that we are made in God’s image and that this means that no matter who we are, whatever we are facing the tough things and the really great things we are all created for a purpose and a reason and God has a plan for our life. A fantastic truth to cling on to in the tough times and the good, even if Jay did gross us out a bit by mentioning how God had planned us even before our parents…!
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before where born I set you apart”
We loved Jay’s idea of calling the chapters and seasons in our lives ‘missions’ that God has set us apart to accomplish, like we would on the Xbox. We love it because actually, that feels to us like a more accurate description for some of the difficult stuff we have to deal with in life and also, knowing that God has set us apart to accomplish them reminds us that he is in charge. As Jay said, we are not too young to speak about the truth Jesus but we also don’t need to be afraid about what other people think because God is with us always.
The whole talk was grounded in some great scripture, and Jay’s honestly about the toughest times in his own teens had us captivated throughout. He shared about suffering from bullying and the day that he and his parents finally had enough. He recalled being outside playing football, so angry because nobody passed him the ball and when he went home and cried, his parents said to him,
“you are fearfully and wonderfully made; you have been chosen... made in the image of Christ, confess that Jesus is on your side”
Jay did and gave his life to Christ and the since then he has got his steps in line with God, realising that Jesus is on his side.
As Jay put all of his trust in Jesus his confidence grew and he had the strength to stand up to bullies, not with confrontation but with confidence. People saw the life changing difference his faith made and in turn, Jay realised that he had a purpose and he submitted to God’s plans
In the course of time, David inquired of the Lord. “shall I go up to Judah?” he asked. The Lord said, “Go up”
Using the example of David, Jay explained that God can speak to us in a very clear way and we can put all our trust in him, trusting in the Lord with all our hearts, something that can be easier said than done, but Jay used his own personal testimony to show us what following Jesus, even in a direction totally different to the one we had planned for ourselves, can open up amazing possibilities and futures, if we take those steps in faith.
When Jay went to a Hillsong conference in Australia he was in a comfortable job that he loved and life was good, but God spoke to him through others about going to bible college. Because Jay trusted God and was putting him first in his life be submitted to his plan and gave up everything, moving to Australia to spend a whole year at Bible and Leadership College.
You only had to look at Jay and hear him speak on Friday night to realise that God definitely had the best possible plan worked out for him, and it was an awesome message for us to trust in God, love Him and get our steps in line with Him. The lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him
Jay closed his talk with the reminder that though submitting to God’s plan isn’t always easy, the great thing is that you know that he is beside you though the mission! He illustrated by getting Joel back on the keyboard,
Playing the piano with the notes in the right order is beautiful and in the wrong order -sounds terrible (no offence Joel!! ☺)
Likewise, Gods plan is beautiful, God is awesome and he has chosen you. He can help you defeat the times of fear, sadness and difficulty. Submit because you are part of Gods plan!
It was another great evening, fixing our eyes on Jesus, and growing in our faith. We are already excited to see what God will do at Ignite in May and what Luke will share with us!
