This month’s ignite brought such an important message that the youth of Chester really
needed to hear to get themselves ready to serve the city in ‘The Weekend’ activities!
We hit off the night with worship which was incredible! The amazing band played so
great this month! Following worship, Leah Ogunyemi brought the fire in our five minutes
of fire sharing Matthew 20:28 with us. She highlighted to us all that all of Jesus’ acts
and miracles were done selflessly, and that we should also act selflessly in serving
others, and not serving for our own personal gain, challenging us to do whatever he
asks of us without needing to know what’s in it for us, and what we will personally gain
from it, but doing it because we love him.
Our very own Luke Fleming then took to the stage, building on this, sharing on The
Paradox before the Passover in John 13:2-17 and posed a challenging question to us;
are you washing feet or are you getting your feet washed? Meaning are we being served
or are we serving others? When we do serve others with our lives we become more like
Jesus, as that’s exactly what he was all about and what his heart was in.
Luke made the point that if you’re too big to serve, you’re too small to lead. Reminding
us that if we become people that think they are above serving, then we become people
that are incapable of leading, as then we are unable to appreciate the importance of
serving as a part of the team.
He emphasised that our job on earth is to wash feet, not have have our feet washed - it’s
the whole point of what we’re here to do! If we become selfish and serve ourselves, then
we deny ourselves the joy that can come from serving others and we deny Jesus
opportunities to perform miracles in our life that can only happen when we reach out to
others in our world!
By stepping out of the boat and sometimes putting ourselves in a vulnerable position to
reach others, we leave Jesus room to do what only he can do, and when we leave him
this space it is a moment and a time when God can most influence your life. Though it
can sometimes be scary, you can always count on Jesus to be right there with you!
Luke reminded us of the story of Jairus in Mark 6 who asked Jesus to heal his daughter
who was sick. Whilst he was taking Jesus to his daughter, Jesus healed another woman
on the way there, and Jairus got told his daughter had died. He saw his own situation
worsen whilst another person had their life transformed by Jesus performing a miracle.
However, by waiting for Jesus and hoping in him and walking with him, Jesus remained
with Jairus, reached his daughter and brought her back to life! A far greater miracle than
healing someone who was sick! Therefore if we continue to believe in Jesus and walk
with him, he will perform greater miracles than we could ever hope for!
Jesus gives us clear instructions and a clear example - that when we step out and serve
others we will reap the rewards! But we shouldn’t serve others for our own personal gain
and the blessings that we will receive from it but for Jesus, but because that’s what he
said to do. Not only will we just receive blessings when we serve God’s agenda and not
our own, but, we will receive limitless opportunities!
Isn’t that amazing?! What an incredible night! - And to top it all off we all ate super tasty
ice cream after the service!! If you weren’t with us you definitely missed out, so make
sure to get yourself along next time, it’s going to be another epic night!
