Stop Searching & look to God.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve come to a point in my life where I feel like I’m at a cross road. In fact, maybe ‘cross’ road is the wrong word for it, it’s more of a ‘million different directions’ road. I’m sure this hits most of us at some point in our lives, maybe just once, maybe just several times, but when it does the only word for how you’re feeling is a little bit lost.
I find that I’m constantly searching; searching to find who I really am, for a job, for a way to head in life - always looking for the next thing. It seems I'm constantly searching and never truly content with the present.
Maybe you’ve just finished your GCSEs and are searching for the right place to do A levels or go to college or you've finished A levels and are trying to figure out whether to go straight to uni or take a gap year. If you take a gap year, where do you go? What do you do? Or maybe you’ve finally finished uni and it’s suddenly hit you that you need to decide what to do with the rest of your life. And then there are those things that seem a little more trivial, like searching for that perfect yet impossible to find outfit for a party on Friday night.
Everybody is searching for something different. Searching for a job, a uni, a gap year. All the physical outcomes are different, but the desired response from them is the same - happiness. Which job is best for me? Which outfit will make me feel the most confident? Where will I be happiest? Have you ever tried looking for something for someone else when even they don’t really know where it is? It takes a seriously long time or you don’t actually find it, but either way it’s a frustrating experience to say the least. But it’s the same in life; we chop and change direction so much trying to find what makes us happiest. But if we’re only looking at the physical things, I’m not so sure we’ll ever truly find it.
Look to God.
That is possibly one of the simplest yet hardest things to do. It’s hard to let go and give God the reins, to give him full control of your life. But when you do, it’ll be one of the most freeing things you ever did. We can become so trapped by searching, frantically trying to find what’s next and what will make us happy but when you allow God to take over he allows us to feel at rest and in that we find the true happiness and contentment that we so desperately search for.
I’m not saying that we just sit around and wait for God to hand us everything on a plate. Searching is an inevitable part of life. I mean we’ll never get anywhere if we don’t actively look for opportunities. But when you are searching for the next step in life, take God with you, involve him in your decisions and trust that he’ll open the right doors and close the wrong ones. Change what you’re looking for, instead of thinking where will ‘I’ be happiest, which place is best for ‘me’. Take a step back and think how can I best use that opportunity to glorify God? Am I able to do what God wants me to here?
