1 Thessalonians 2.
Sharing the gospel in the face of opposition.
Often as Christians we become attached to this stigma that we think we’re better than everyone else, that we never do anything wrong or go through hard times. With opinions like this it can be difficult to do the work God has set out for us to do, and sometimes it seems that as soon as we find ourselves going for it with God, and doing what he asks of us, the enemy wriggles his way in and tries to deter us from that.
In 1 Thessalonians 2, Paul talks about the struggles they faced in Philippi, but how despite their hardships they still continued to do Gods work.
So how do we share our faith in the face of opposition?
In Gods strength not our own.
On our own we are weak. It’s so easy to become lost and thrown around by the trials that we try to conquer on our own. When we think we can do it by ourselves we very quickly lose our strength. Keep God at the centre of every situation, good or bad, in prayer and by reading the word and your strength will be renewed.
1 Thessalonians 2v2. “We had previously suffered and been treated outrageously in Philippi, as you know, but with the help of God we dared to tell you his Gospel in the face of opposition”
With the help of God, we can do all things.
We don’t need to assert authority or be demanding to share Gods’ word. We’re not here to seek glory for ourselves or be better than anyone else, but to glorify God. Sometimes this can be as simple as caring for and loving one another. Even when people are against you, show them love and they’ll see God through you.
1 Thessalonians 2v6-9.
Remember that the words we share with people are not our words but are Gods words. Knowing that we cannot do Gods work in our own strength but that everything is through God, allows us to stay humble. In staying humble, people will realise that as Christians we’re not ‘better’ or live perfect lives, but we’re people, just like everyone else.
The enemy will try his best to get in the way – v18 – but we know that with Gods help, all things are possible.
So stand tall, and share the Gospel in the face of the opposition.
